INTERVIEW WITH DESIGNER YIFANG WAN

Yifang Wan is described by her PR and good friend Roxanne Chen as a "great talent", having been awarded the Loreal Professional Young Designer Award at Central St Martin's BA Fashion Degree Show, securing a place on the MA Fashion Design Womenswear course and showcasing her collections at London Fashion Week, this is definitely a very true statement. It's obvious that Yifang is really proving her amazing potential as a fashion designer, while others can only dream. Her simplistic and effortlessly elegant aesthetic, with low key elements of martial art and sculpture, make Yifang's designs extremely covetable and IDOL is excited to see more from this young, new designer in the very near future. Yifang talks of her achievements, designs and plans for the future.

YOU HAVE ALREADY ACHIEVED MUCH, BEING AWARDED THE LOREAL PROFESSIONAL YOUNG DESIGNER AWARD AND HAVE SHOWCASED COLLECTIONS AT LONDON FASHION WEEK. HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT ALL YOUR ACHIEVEMENTS?
Well, I just keep on going and I didn't really expect an award or anything, I just worked really hard on my collection and each project and dedicated a lot of time and energy to them.
WHAT WAS YOUR INSPIRATION FOR YOUR S/2 2013 COLLECTION?
It was a development from my MA collection for Central St Martins, it's very sculptural and minimalistic,  with elements from martial art. It's very violent in a  quiet way and very minimal. I try out a lot of patterns to achieve the different shapes.
WHAT IS YOUR AESTHETIC?
I always want to make the clothes really effortless, in a way but I obviously consider every detail and all the lines and shapes.
WHAT WAS THE CREATIVE PROCESS?
I did a lot of trial and research to achieve the end result and shape. I was still changing and tweaking my designs until the last minute, just going through the whole process of putting different ideas together.
DO YOU HAVE A DESIGNER WHOM YOU FOLLOW OR LOOK UP TO?
I have always really liked Martin Mason Margiela, all his designs are really conceptual and beautiful.
WHEN DID YOU DISCOVER YOU WANTED TO BECOME A FASHION DESIGNER, WAS IT ALWAYS THE PATH YOU WANTED TO FOLLOW?
I think I just happened to be in the fashion industry, because I was studying management and then I got experience with 'a fashion company and it was the first place where I could really see everything about design.  I then i realised how much I really liked design and so I went to Central St Martins to study on a design course.  I always liked art and design, so I was quite in to it from an early age,  but i didn't really imagine that I could ever be a designer. I thought I would be a painter actually.
IS THERE STILL AN OPPORTUNITY FOR YOU TO DO ART OR HAVE YOU MOVED ON FROM THAT AND WANT TO STICK TO BEING A DESIGNER?
Now I'm really into sculpting  things, since I made my accessories for my Spring/Summer 2013 collection. I think I would do sculpture,  lifestyle and industry designs at some point.
WHERE DO YOU SEE YOURSELF IN 10 YEARS TIME?
I want to be a designer, but not necessarily  just in fashion, I'll probably bring other things into it.  I would really love to have a incorporation with some artists and other designers, maybe doing accessories and jewellery. But yeah,  I would see myself as a designer, but not necessarily your typical fashion designer.
DO YOU SEE YOURSELF WITH YOUR OWN FASHION LABEL, IF SO WHAT WOULD YOU CALL IT?
Yes I want my own label.  My fashion label would without a doubt  be my name. I really hope one day I could have my own shop.
WHERE DO YOU STORE YOUR DESIGNS/ COLLECTIONS?
I pack all my projects and collections I've completed away, because that's the way I work. I had a long process of researching design, drawings and choosing fabrics. So when I decided to start pattern cutting, I set up a desk in my house, I mean if I need space for my work, I look for space, but I don't think it is worth spending money when I'm still in the process of doing research, as I don't think i really need much space. Roxanne is my friend and she's looking after my PR, so if I wanted i could put some clothing in her studio. I think it's the best way to work  in terms of cost for young designers, because it is expensive to keep your designs elsewhere.
IF YOUR HOUSE WAS BURNING DOWN WHAT WOULD YOU RESCUE?
Well, I don't think I would rescue anything (laughs). Just myself. Because I always feel that you can start a fresh on brand new things , every time I finish a project I feel like there is always something I could improve. I wouldn't feel any major loss if my old designs were burnt. I always remember when i did my first major project, I was buying a coffee and put my bags down and I spilt coffee over it, that was quite upsetting at the time , but then I thought maybe it's good that I can start a fresh and think of something even better than before. If anything happened to my designs now, I always have my online site for my collection, so it's not a disaster.
ARE YOU INVOLVED IN ANYTHING COMING UP SOON?
I'm doing another collection for Autumn/ Winter 2013, which i'm showcasing at London Fashion Week, I'm still in discussion as to where I'm going to show my collection, I haven't decided yet what I want to do, but i'm sure I will have another collection. I'm thinking about similar ideas as I did for my last collection, I still feel the same about who I am as a designer and I will still keep the sculptural accessories. I'm still collecting different materials to see which i would prefer to use, but I really like using natural fabric like cotton, it's easier to shape. I always look for light fabric, but it has some weight as well so that it can drape really well.
WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO OTHER ASPIRING DESIGNERS?
To keep an open mind. Everything is competitive, but I think the most important thing is that you have to find yourself, you have to know who you are as a designer, what you like, what you dislike. Because when I was at Central St Martins, my aesthetic was for different things and then my tutor told me that, so that I would see my true potential.
CAN YOU SEE A CHANGE IN THE WORK YOU PRODUCED AT CENTRAL ST MARTINS TO THE DESIGNS YOU ARE CREATING NOW?
I feel as though it is a development, I did have certain ideas, but I've developed and simplified them. I think it's a process and it's all about concepts.
DID YOU GAIN EXPERIENCE THROUGH AN INTERNSHIP IN THE INDUSTRY?
I did some internships, I went to Preen, I learnt a lot from that because they showed me how to trace patterns and taught me to see how the patterns worked, so I saw the combination of patterns and colours and could see how they were created, so I think that was particularly useful skill to learn.
DO YOU EVER HAVE A FREE MOMENT TO TAKE TIME OUT?
Not really, because at the moment I am just one person doing all of this. I'm always doing something, especially as I have to showcase another of my collections in just February which isn't long at all.
DO YOU THINK YOU WOULD EVER WANT TO TRAVEL WITH YOUR DESIGNS?
I never really have a spare moment to think, but for now I'm going to just focus on London for the next three years and then maybe after that I will travel, the seasons come so quickly so I'll have to see.
IS THERE A MANTRA YOU LIVE BY?
I've never really thought about it. I guess if I want to do something, i want to do it to the best of my ability, I don't really have any plans or expectations, it's just if someone gives me work or I have something to do, I want to make it perfect.

Blackstar Bikes

Entrepreneurs from Amsterdam, but currently living in Africa discovered that the continents level of manufactured products was seriously lacking. For a land which is penchant for its cocoa, crude oil and coffee beans , it does not benefit as much of these natural products are exported to western countries and China to be recreated and sold at a far higher price, just a teeny bit unfair (note my sarcasm).
‘Blackstar’ was founded as a result of this; the idea in mind was to make bikes out of bamboo sourced from Ghana, which were sustainable and natural, but also ultra-stylish, urban transportation.  With this philosophy, ‘Blackstar’ intend on supporting Africa’s labor force and entrepreneurs, giving the inhabitants employment and saving the future of African trade, along with  stressing the important of green consumption and environmental values.  Blackstar bikes are not only strikingly unique, but for an amazing cause. Bring out your urban rider.

DIANE VON FURSTENBERG BOOK

  • Wednesday, November 28, 2012 - 19:40
Well-known children's author Camilla Morton's has taken  new twist on the classic story of 'The Emperor's New Clothes'  with her brand new fashion fairy tale memoir series, the main character being famous American designer 'Diane Von Furstenberg. A tale which tells the story of two girls in their youth, one being' Diane', with true facts based on the designers life and the other being an 'Empress', who struggles with her royal duties and like all great fairy tales there is of course a moral to learn.
It would seem the story wasn't hard to tell in the glamorous, totally barking and eventful world of fashion, "once you are immersed in the designer's world, maybe it's magic but, they really do just appear to write themselves,"  said Camilla Morton. " There are so many characters and personalities…inspiration was easy to find. Diane's tory and enthusiasm is so rich that I really wanted to up the fairy tale and bring the Empress to life." The story was a joint effort between author and designer, Morton wrote the story, but Von Furstenberg drew the beautiful,  quirky and colourful illustrations, choosing the print, colour and layout of each page.
The main characters to feature in other popular books from the fashion series are designers Christian Lacroix and Manolo Blahnik, making Diane Von Furstenberg an excellent and inspirational choice for the first female to star in the iconic belgium authors story books. What a happily ever after.
The Empress' New Clothes will be available from netaporter.com from Monday November 26 2012.

INTERVIEW WITH HASSAN HEJAZI FOR IDOL MAGAZINE

Thursday 15th November saw indie pop beauty and fashionista Marina and the Diamonds perform her brand new single 'How To Be A Heartbreaker' along with 5 other of her well-known tracks at the latest hot spot in Mayfair - luxury live music venue and champagne lounge 'Baroque.' Fitting perfectly in the sensual and sumptuous settings of 'Baroque' , Marina wore two specially made, beautifully embellished, baroque dresses, designed by womenswear Hasan Hejazi, who refers to Marina as his "Muse". In a rich, deep palette of maroon Marina was the epitome of artistic and sophisticated glamour with killer vocals, setting the stage on fire and giving her performance that added wow-factor. Marina wore dress number two, following her performance, where she joined the party, after a quick change into a slinky shimmering blue baroque number, a dress that was more suited for mingling with the crowd and indulging in a few glasses of baroques trademark champagne compete towers. A truly glamorous evening, complimented by a dazzling performance and aesthetically beautiful baroque dress. Idol caught up with Marina Diamandis and womenswear designer Hasan Hejazi...
MARINA, WHAT ABOUT HASAN'S DESIGNS DO LOVE THE MOST?
He has a intrinsic understanding of the femininity and its relation to strength. I love his designs so much; they manage to blend glamour, power and attitude all whilst embracing the traditional feminine aesthetic that I adore. It's really rare to find a designer that does that naturally.

YOU'VE KNOWN HASAN FOR QUITE A WHILE NOW AND HE REFERS TO YOU AS HIS MUSE - HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT IT?
I don't really feel anything! I see it as 2 friends feeding off each other's seperate inspirations. It's all felt quite casual. I think when I first tried his gowns on and they fit like a glove on the bust AND the waist, it was a revelation. I knew we'd go on to work together.

YOU CLEARLY HAVE A STRONG INTEREST IN FASHION - HOW DO YOU THINK FASHION AND MUSIC TRANSLATE AND INFLUENCE EACH OTHER?
I see clothing and style as an extension of an artist's musical ideas. It enables you to make your concept 3D- something you can see and touch, as opposed to just hear. I'd be a really different artist without the use of fashion.
HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE HASAN'S DESIGNS?
Elegant, powerful, feminine- with a hint of frivolity.
WHAT IN YOUR OPINION MAKES HIM STAND OUT FROM OTHER DESIGNERS?
His designs always look and feel luxurious. He never does anything by halves. Everything is of the highest quality.
HASAN, THE OUTFITS YOU DESIGNED FOR MARINA ARE INSPIRED BY THE VENUE BAROQUE - WHERE DID THIS IDEA COME FROM? WHAT ABOUT THE VENUE INSPIRED YOU THE MOST?
I was inspired most by the title of the club and the luxury interior, as a result I wanted to keep the dress simple but with a grand statement with the embroidery which was hand done by Hawthorne and Heaney.

ARE YOU WORKING ON ANY NEW PROJECTS? WHAT HAVE YOU GOT PLANNED NEXT?
I am currently working on the WEDDINGBELLS project that features the Baroque dresses in a grand style photoshoot which will be released soon after the event takes places. I am also really concentrating on ,my next RTW collection for A/W 13/14 which I am very excited about as I haven't done a seasonal collection since S/S12.
YOU OPENLY CALL MARINA YOUR MUSE BUT HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE THE GIRL WHO WEARS YOUR DESIGNS?
Yes she is my muse as she closely represents the kind of women I envisage wearing my designs, she is strong, individual, fun and creative. There is  also a strong sense of powerful sexuality in there to.
WHAT WAS THE CREATIVE PROCESS OF MAKING MARINA'S DRESS?
It was just a case of using the clubs look as a basis and starting point for sketching ideas and from there developing those ideas. I of course thought about Marina and what silhouette she looks great in and it all progresses from there. From the start I knew I wanted to use embroidery for the first time so this was a very exciting part of the creative process for me and we ended up using a very traditional technique but applying it in a more contemporary colour palette. Lastly we had fittings as I wanted the fit of the dress to be the strongest detail, it has been fully corseted on the inside to subtly accentuate Marinas hour glass figure. The dress was still being hand finished up until the last minute but seeing it on finished for the first time made everything worthwhile.

SHAVATA: THE EYEBROW EXPERT ARTICLE FOR MILK AND HONEY

SHAVATA ‘THE EYEBROW EXPERT’

On Wednesday 7 November 2012, I experienced an evening of threading, waxing and tweezing at the Shavata Brow Studio located in Harrods and was left in the trusted hands of the leading lady herself, Shavata. I was soon to have my brows reshaped and transformed. Having been in the industry for 25 years, Shavata is THE go to person when brows are concerned, as you can imagine I felt extremely privileged.
Having had my brows  threaded in the past,  I knew what to expect in terms of pain. It’s a process where by a thin cotton thread specially designed for threading is doubled and then twisted, gliding over the areas of unwanted hair, plucking the eyebrow far deeper than a pair of tweezers, at follicle level. I’d never had them waxed, so this was a whole new experience for me, a hot wax combination was poured thinly across my skin, a strip was placed over the wax and then pealed off quickly in the opposition direction of the hair growth for maximum effect, any straying hairs were then plucked away.

Known as the “authority on eyebrows” Shavata’s 3 step method is nothing but the best. Having recently re-shaped X Factor’s contestants eyebrows, I knew that I could trust her with my brows. Combining all 3 ways to trim your brows from using the Indian tradition of threading to plucking the finer strands with her newly launched tweezers, Shavata brings  you the finest arch and brow shape possible.
I could not have been happier with the end result, sharp, refined and not a stray hair in sight -totally worth the soon forgotten pain. I shall definitely be paying another visit.
Visit here to take a peak at more of  Shavata’s fabulous treatments…

MARYNN ILLUSTRATIONS FOR IDOL MAGAZINE

  • Thursday, November 8, 2012 - 22:19
Marynn is a young fashion illustrator from Nantes, France, aspiring to be graphic designer, whose creative juices flow best when drinking a good old 'cuppa' and a killer beat . Her work is based on fashion, predominantly street fashion, beauty, technology, jewellery and magazines  many of which she has under her name such as; WAD Magazine, Paulette Magazine, 3PetitPoints Magazine and Simone Magazine to name just a few.
She also designed a tribute to 'Hermes' at 'Fashion Week Illustree' - an event which brings together fashion illustrators who have to represent a  designer brand through an illustration that they have designed. Marynn was seen as at the height of talent with her beautiful illustration for 'Hermes', which was of and horse and its rider, a suitable image for a brand that specialise in leather.

Nomadic and geometric prints are the key focus of the illustration,  the bursts of colour, contrasted with a neutral background bringing the design to life. The designs  "refinement and sensuality" impressed the event and her illustration most definitely had a riding style. Marynn's illustrations combine fine art and graphic design elements, with fictional characters such as Alice from  'Alice in Wonderland' , youthful girls and mythical creatures, her artwork is strikingly individual, as well as eclectic, playful and feminine.

JR ART ARTICLE FOR IDOL MAGAZINE

Tuesday, November 6, 2012 - 18:54
JR owns the biggest art gallery in the world. The world truly is his oyster as he exhibits freely all over the streets of it, catching the eye of street-wanderers and grabbing the attention of  not just the usual exhibition-goers. His artwork reflects 'Art and Act', a personal showing of commitment, freedom, identity and limitations in life.

JR found a camera in the Paris subway, following this he completed a tour of European Street Art, discovering the artists who communicated messages and signs visually through the subway walls. From this experience, he was given the inspiration to focus his work on the vertical limits, acting as an onlooker; watching people from dark and forbidden passages and undergrounds and over the rooftops of the beautiful and charismatic  city.

During 2006, the creatively driven artist achieved ' Portrait of a Generation', an illegal project, which comprised of a collection of portraits of the 'suburban thugs' which he posted in enormous formats in across the bourgeois districts of Paris, it was instantly "official" after the Paris City Hall littered its building walls with JR photography. This was just the start of the artists illegal exhibitions. In 2007,  JR joined forces with artist Marco creating "Face 2 Face" -the biggest illegal exhibition. It featured huge portraits of Israelis and Palestinians face to face amongst eight cities on either side of security fences, experts never thought it be possible - JR proved them wrong. In 2008 he embarked on a international trip for 'Women Are Heroes', underlining the dignity of women who are often the targets of conflicts, the film in which was presented at Cannes in competition for the Camera d'Or. In 2011, JR received the Ted prize, which gave him the opportunity to 'make a wish to change the world.' He created 'Inside Out' an international participatory project, encouraging people worldwide to paste a photo they've created to support an idea, action or to share a memorable experience. It's safe to say that JR is an extraordinary artist, pushing arts limits. He creates "Pervasive Art" painted, uninvitedly on void buildings, slums and broken bridges in Africa and Brazil. He breaks the boundaries that others wouldn't dare touch, bringing the secrets of the world to light.

  • Thursday, November 1, 2012 - 21:53
The Dubai Mall opened its doors to the public on October 19 2012, promising a new concept of high-end shoe shopping. Being the world's largest shopping centre,  it seems only right to open within it  a  96,00 square foot footwear store with 250 top brands and 30 boutique shops.
Glistening gold arches mark the entrance, looking grand with designer stores such as Louis Vuitton, Tod's,  Prada, LV and Christian Dior,  designer shoes that have the upmost sophistication and are definitely parade-worthy, for those of us who want a touch of luxury. Or at the opposite end designer, sports brands such as Lacoste, Puma and Diesel shoes. Who doesn't want to feast their eyes on this shoe haven?
